Hybrid or electric car: how to make an informed choice?
Are you thinking of buying an environmentally friendly car that meets your needs? Most automakers now offer hybrid and electric models with a significantly lower carbon footprint than their gas-powered counterparts. Which of these two options is right for you? In this blog post, your OCTO Auto Service Plus family mechanic explains how to make an informed choice between a hybrid or electric car.
The main differences
Electric cars use a battery-powered electric motor, unlike hybrids with gasoline engines. These two types of operation have some differences to consider:
- Electric cars are usually more expensive upfront. However, the mechanics are more straightforward and require less maintenance than a hybrid vehicle.
- Hybrid cars offer autonomy but emit CO2 and other pollutants, unlike electric vehicles.
- 100 per cent electric cars require getting used to. For example, you must plan your drives according to the availability of charging stations and the potential decrease in range during cold weather.
- Hybrid vehicles save you money on gas, but you’ll still have to go to the gas station.
Things to consider
Both types of vehicles have environmental benefits. However, your lifestyle and habits are crucial in determining which suits you more. If you don’t have to travel long distances regularly and can install a charging station at home, an electric car would be a great fit.
Do you drive for a living or often go on road trips? A hybrid vehicle will give you a little more wiggle room. For example, if the battery dies and you’re far from a charging station, the gasoline engine will kick in to prevent you from running out of power.
Government rebates
The Canadian federal and provincial governments offer various rebates for purchasing these types of vehicles. However, these rebates only apply to 100 per cent electric cars and plug-in hybrids (not conventional hybrids). Find out more about the various programs and their conditions.
