Want to take a road trip? Here’s what to check on your car before setting out!

Summer is just around the corner! It’s time to start gearing up for an exciting vacation or maybe some well-deserved relaxation—or both. If you’re an explorer at heart and love taking road trips, make sure to give your vehicle a thorough once-over to avoid any unpleasant surprises along the way. In this article, your OCTO Auto Service Plus family mechanic reminds you to perform a few essential checks before you hit the road. Happy reading!

Components to inspect

Long journeys can put extra strain on certain mechanical parts and systems. Take the time to check the following elements to ensure your safety and that of your passengers:

  • Tires. Ensure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. You should also check the tread condition. If the tread depth is 1.6 millimetres or less, it’s time to replace your tires.
  • Liquids. Make sure your engine oil, coolant and brake fluid are clean and topped up. Replace or add fluids as needed.
  • Brakes. Before your road trip, check your brake pads and discs for wear. Worn brakes can seriously compromise your safety.
  • Windshield and wiper blades. Inspect your windshield for any cracks that could worsen while you’re driving. Test your wipers to ensure they work properly, and check that your windshield washer fluid reservoir is full.
  • Air conditioning system. Having your AC break down during a heatwave could ruin your trip! Get your air conditioning system serviced by an expert before hitting the road, so you’re not caught unprepared.
  • Battery. A weak or dying battery could quickly derail your road-tripping plans. Test your battery now and replace it if necessary to avoid a breakdown.
  • Lights. Ask a friend to stand outside your vehicle and check that your headlights, turn signals and brake lights are all in good working order.

Other precautions to consider

Besides the above-mentioned mechanical checks, carefully review your car insurance clauses, especially if you plan to leave your home province. Also, ensure your emergency kit is fully stocked with essentials like jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit and flares.

Scheduling preventive maintenance with an experienced mechanic will ensure smooth sailing on your drive. Before you venture out, make an appointment at your nearest OCTO Auto Service Plus. Have a fantastic road trip!
